Is ocenaudio safe reddit9/7/2023 ![]() ![]() * Funny enough, it was exactly the kind of EULA you see on pretty much any commercial website, but less common for software, where people actually know their shitįrom a cybersecurity standpoint, it’s doing stuff it does not need to and sending the data collected to their Russian home base, which acquired the program around the same time. If you don't want that information sent, don't send bug reports. Second, any bug reporting system (again, check literally any commercial product) will ask about as much relevant info as possible when submitting bug reports. This is being way more upfront about how the sausage is made than the industry average pre-GDPR. What Audacity already does, and what most other apps have only begrudgingly started doing after GDPR became law, is A) tell you what the data is (again, it's trivial stuff) and B) let you disable auto-updating. It's like your phone number in that regard. ![]() So, first things first: Any program that has an auto-updater phones home (it's how an auto-updater works), and "revealing" your IP address is inherent in that process. It doesn't help that some people get off on telling ghost stories and using bad-faith words like "Russian servers" to scare you. This was always the case, they haven't "changed" or "gotten caught." Armchair security nerds were freaking out about a poorly written EULA* that quickly got corrected, and now we have to live in a world where threads like these will be with us for quite some time. They never collected anything unusual to begin with. ![]()
